About Aligarh Muslim University
The Aligarh Muslim University is counted among the oldest Central Universities of the country of India, known for its rich and unique cultural heritage. The University itself resembles the untiring and selfless efforts of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who was a great visionary. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was the founder of the Aligarh Muslim University. He was deeply moved by the changes that took place in socio-economic and educational fields after the First World War, and believed that the only way to give away with these facets of trend is by initiating the spirit of modernization in his community by the hands of education.
His experiences abroad, namely in the Cambridge and Oxford Universities and in the public schools there, did act as an inspiration and visionary towards the pattern of education in practice. He took the pattern where there is a harmony between the cultures of Sciences from West and arts of the East. It was in 1875 when he founded the High School at Aligarh, this was his first initiative. Soon this school was transformed into a college, the Mohammadan Anglo Oriental College, in around three years time. Later in 1920 this college was finally metamorphosed in the form of Aligarh Muslim University by the enactment of a Parliament’s Act. This University played a vital role in the formation of Islamic State of Pakistan. Some eminent Muslim leaders, and Urdu scholars and writers did graduated here.
The city of Aligarh is situated in a region between the rivers Yamuna and Ganga. The city is just 130 kilometers away from the country’s capital in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located in the south-east part of Delhi, in the Grand Trunk Road route and rail route of Delhi-Howrah. The latitudinal location is 27°54’ north and longitudinal position is at 78°05’ east. The climatic condition of the city is very varied, with hot and dry summers and relatively dry and cold winter and some interventions of rainy seasoon. The Aligarh Muslim University campus is situated just near Aligarh railway station, which is 2 kilometers from the railway station.
The University affiliates many schools and colleges, for education excellence in different disciplines. The Aligarh Muslim University has 250 and more courses in traditional as well as modern disciplines of education. The premier University does attract student from places all over the world especially from West Asia, South East Asia and Africa. Some of the courses also have seat reservations for the students from the Commonwealth and SAARC member countries. The Aligarh Muslim University is open to all irrespective of their religion, race, caste, creed or gender. At the inception, the Mohammadan Anglo Oriental College was under the affiliation of Calcutta University; in 1885 it was passed under Allahabad University. It started its own magazine when the century was just turning. Today the Aligarh Muslim University campus is a residential one which offers around 280 courses, with around 30000 students being taught by over 2000 faculties teaching through more than eight departments.
